In the Qur'an, Musa is a prophet and messenger sent to the Pharaoh of Egypt to free the Israelites from their enslaved lives. He is sent to them and communicates to them that they will be judged for their disbelief in their true deity, Allah, and will be killed for their sins (Quran 7:84).
The story narrates the horror of Moses, when he encounters a shepherd who, much to his surprise, confirms his identity as a prophet. The shepherd comes to his aid and tells Moses that the Pharaoh's soldiers are going to attack and kill the Israelites. Moses then follows the shepherd to the Pharaoh's palace and asks to speak to the Pharaoh.
The Pharaoh responds to Moses by ordering him and the Israelites to leave his realm within three days (Quran 7:85). Musa, however, responds by telling the Pharaoh that Allah has a plan for his people that they will be granted a time of forty years to learn from their past errors and he warns the Pharaoh that he and the people are surely going to be sent back to the land of Israel (Quran 7:87). The Pharaoh then calls for the magicians to test Musa, who has brought his own witness (Quran 7:92).
The magicians accept Musa's story, stating that he is a true prophet, but that the god they serve is a false god. They ask the Pharaoh to send Musa away, but he refuses, accusing them of being deceitful, before striking them dead (Quran 7:93). Musa then predicts that every time the Pharaoh is angry at him, he will have power over him and his soldiers, as he was powerless before him. The Pharaoh is immediately pacified and Musa and the Israelites are freed from his jurisdiction (Quran 7:98).
This story of Musa is the longest story of a prophet in the Quran and is discussed in elaborate detail. The story of the miracles in the Qur'an and the story of Musa have been preserved for posterity for over a thousand years by oral tradition and illustrated in numerous works of art and literature.
